Parents’ Roles in Learners Developing Digital Citizenship

One of my school district clients, after listening to a podcast I had recorded for parents around teaching risk-taking, asked me to produce a video clip illustrating the role of risk-taking as parents support youngsters’ development of digital citizenship.

When should parents be keeping control and making it totally safe for a child’s engagement? When is it appropriate to be stepping back and building more of a safety net, checking in on youngsters’ decisions as they’re making them on their own? What signs might parents pick up that suggest a youngster is ready for more digital decision-making on his or her own? What signs might raise a concern suggesting a need to take back some of that decision-making and support or coach the child in the development of their readiness to be making those digital decisions?

Conversations are critical among parents and children, parenting partners, and teachers with parents and students. You may find the video useful in generating the conversations.
